Casa wandered in from the Weyrwoman’s quarters, a glass filled with fresh, cool fruit juice in hand. The heat of the Hatching grounds was causing the glass to sweat, little droplets of water running down it and over Casa’s fingers. She wasn’t paying it any attention, however, as she made her way onto the sands and over to where Thallyath was poised, position anxious and excited with her wings just slightly extended and focus intent upon egg number six.
“Any new progress?” Casa asked her dragon, slipping up beside her and patting her gently on the jawline. Thallyath gave a soft puff of breath, and hummed quietly.I think they are ready, she said quietly, almost whispering against Casa’s mind. The sudden loud cracking of Egg 5 caused both dragon and rider to gasp; Thallyath sat back on her hindquarters and bellowed to the Weyr at large – the eggs were cracking shell now – before settling herself back into her position, on the outskirts of her clutch but close enough to feel at peace should anything happen.
As the Sands began to fill with hopeful Candidates – as well as leering ones – the eggs took up wobbling, as if the ground were shaking. Egg number 6 had gone quiet after the last big crack, leaving the way clear for egg nine to be the first to Hatch; a delicate little green broke through her shell, tumbling head over tail before sprawling in the warmth of the sands. She looked around without moving her head, before quietly picking herself up and giving a wobbly shake. Sand sprinkled the ground around her, andGreen 01 quickly made her way towards the boys, claiming her life mate without incident.
Casa smiled to herself as the first bond was made. Sure, green wasn’t the best colour to start a Hatching with, but the dragonet seemed strong and sure, even if she was on the small side. But then, the eggs were small, so Casa didn’t think any of the babies would be particularly big – not with such tiny parents. Casa had barely finished that thought when two more eggs exploded; egg eight revealing another green, while egg 3 gave way to a blue. Casa applauded excitedly as the two dragonets took in their surroundings, and then each other curiously. Their Impression was just as relaxed as the first, and Casa breathed a sigh of relief whenGreen 02 and Blue 01 found their mates without incident.
Not wanting to be left out of the excitement, Egg 10 began to rock, managing to tip over in the process. That allowed the shell to become covered in cobwebbed cracks, and with one great shove against the inside, egg 10 revealed another blue; Just asBlue 02 was making his way gingerly through the centre of the nest, he noticed the gold egg shifting, and diverted his tracks to go and investigate. There were quiet gasps and whispers of worry as he stopped before the golden egg, bringing attention to her rocking and swaying. Casa felt her blood run cold when Blue 02 batted gently at the shell, then headbutted it with a sudden forceful motion. The gold egg tumbled over, and cracked loudly.
Apparently pleased with his actions,Blue 02 turned to one side and trotted happily through the slippery sands towards the blue that was his. No one was really watching when Blue 02 Impressed, since most eyes and attention were focused on the slowly shattering shell of the gold. After a few moments of breathless silence, she shook her way free of the shell, and looked around curiously. There was so much to see! So much to do! Her gaze rolled over the eggs still yet to Hatch, and she snorted softly. Climbing to her feet awkwardly, Gold 01 took one last look out across the Sands at her yet to hatch brothers and sisters, before turning confidently towards a small gaggle of girls.
Gold 01 didn’t bother to approach the girls, but her eyes whirled the rainbow of Impression before she started regally walking across the Sands, a smooth and beautiful Come. echoing in the minds of all those at the Hatching, as she called for her bonded to follow her to food. A couple of the young women exchanged confused expressions, until the one that had been Bonded tripped over herself in her haste to join the demanding little dragon.
As if knowing better than to upstage their golden sister, a long break followed her glorious Impression. Casa sent a brat off to get her more juice and a snack for herself and her friends while they waited, knowing the kid would be fleet of foot lest they chance missing what happened next. She was right, and they were back about five minutes before action started once more – starting with egg 01; another green claimed the stage, followed swiftly when Egg 07 hatche3d to reveal another blue brother. They impressed quickly and without incident, which had Casa both relieved and anxious; the quicker and tidier the Impressions, the more worried she became that the rug was going to be ripped out from under their feet. She could feel Thallyath’s anxiety even as the dragon did her best to shove it away and ignore it.
Egg 04 was the next to breakshell, and Casa gave a happy gasp when the little brown head popped out of the hole, and was followed by an equally brown body. So he wasn’t a bronze, but he was brown and that meant this clutch wasn’t all blues and greens, which was good! Casa whistled softly between her teeth whenBrown 01 quickly found his mate – but not before snuffling around the feet of several of the young men standing nearby.
While everyone was focused onBrown 01 and his Impression, no one noticed as Egg 11 broke her shell, tumbling wet and slippery into the sands, which felt nice! The tindy green dragon rolled around in the sand, feeling it scratch itches she hadn’t noticed until then; she stood up quietly and without fuss, before turning her attention on the girls not far away from herself. They were a small group, but that was okay! [dgrene]green 04[/dgreen] didn’t need to make a big scene or go hunting for her lifemate. She was right there! Giving a little trill and almost tripping over her own feet, Green 04 stumbled up to her most precious, best human and Impressed the bewildered girl with very little fanfare at all.
Not to be left until dead last, Egg 05 seemed to completely combust around the dragonet that was within it, leavingBlue 04 looking around with wide eyes before he stood up and tossed his head. The motion caused him to lose balance, and Blue 04 made an outraged huffing sound in a display of displeasure, which was answered by one of the young male candidates darting forward to assist his young blue with the great battle against gravity. While Blue 04 was being assisted to the sidelines, Egg 06 finally fell free, having been slowly picking at the cracks, to reveal a delicate green. She snorted, and extended her wings fully with slow motions, then folded them back in.
WhileGreen 05 was practising control over moving her wings, Egg 12 made its own entrance, the dragonet within falling out and then tossing his head, little Brown 02 attempting to roar as he made his entrance. He was big, bigger than his siblings, but still small when compared to other dragonets from other parents. Nonetheless, he climbed to his feet, and stood still as he glared around at all the Candidates with a sharp, purposeful gaze. Finally, he found what he was looking for! Just as Green 05 found her mate, so too did Brown 02 and they passed each other with a cordial silence, Brown 02 giving his sister a snort.
Hot on their heels, as if afraid they would be dubbed as failures, egg 12 and Egg 02 both shook frantically, rolling around on the spot and sounds of distress coming from within; one young man stepped forward and gave Egg 12 a good kick, helping to shatter the egg around the baby within. Without his shell,Brown 02 gave a crow of success, and scrambled to his feet. He completely ignored the young man who had helped him find freedom, and instead skittered across the sands with remarkable speed to collide headlong into his lifemate, just as Green 06 finally broke her own shell, and sprawled into the warm sands. So warm and toasty! She purred as she wriggled in deeper, lazily swirling eyes meeting those of her bonded and encouraging him to come join her in the hot sands.
Casa blinked as she realised the Hatching was over; for it had both been remarkably swift, and there was no injury to take note of. Turning to S’far, Casa grabbed his face between both her hands and planted a warm kiss on his lips, before releasing him as she laughed softly. She had no words for how elated she was by the whole ordeal – not one scratch! No death, no duds! Casa just beamed as she watched the new Weyrlings being herded off to eat, bathe, and be oiled.
