Latest Updates

2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Thistle!

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Why only 18+?
Pern started as a dark game, with kidnapping and abuse that we felt was only suitable for those individuals over the age of eighteen. We also allow the posting of sexual situations, swearing, drug usage and abuse, and other situations that really aren’t suitable for minors. While the site has mellowed out over the years, the community feels more comfortable maintaining the 18+ restriction. It should be noted that while we cannot stop individuals from lying about their age when they join the site, anyone found to be under 18 at the time of joining will receive an instant ban, because not only are they putting the site at risk, but they are also putting their RP partners at risk if any mature content was RPed.

Account-Per-Player or Account-Per-Character?
We are an Account-per-Character site, and implement the use of a Sub-Account system, so you never have to log in or out to change accounts. You can find a step-by-step guide on how to link up your Sub-Accounts to your Player account here.

How welcoming is Pern to marginalized players and/or characters?
In the real world, we are committed to giving people of all races, sexes, sexual orientations, and gender identities a safe and comfortable place to role play. However, we also remind players that Pern is not our modern world. Pern is a conservative and regressive society, where many of our modern sensibilities are not yet developed.

In-character, expect to find a world that struggles with sexism, homophobia, and other difficult topics. Pern is a patriarchal and anti-LGBT world, and if you decide to play a character from a marginalized group, that character can expect to encounter prejudices. At World of Pern, we consider this a part of our in-character world building, and an excellent source of conflict for characters from these groups.

Female characters can expect to face discrimination when seeking most ranking positions and the Impression of fighting dragons. Female Impressions of fighting dragons are allowed, but players are reminded that female dragonriders are rare in-character, and your character will be among the exceptions.

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters face heavy discrimination in Holds and Halls, but enjoy some measure of sanctuary in Weyrs. Homosexuality is accepted in weyrs as an inevitable side-effect of dragon mating behavior, but that doesn’t mean everyone is comfortable with it. World of Pern’s impressions are not based on sexual orientation, but the in-character myth that sexual orientation affects impression is still alive and well.

Finally, on Pern, there is no concept of transgenderism. Non-cis characters are absolutely allowed, but players should remember that the Pernese do not understand transgenderism or gender dysphoria. A Pernese person cannot identify as transgender or seek transition because these are concepts that simply do not exist in their world. These characters may still struggle with their dysphoria and/or go through other struggles related to it, but this world lacks the ideas, terminology, and support systems we associate with transgender issues today.

If you want to play a female or LGBT character but are concerned about our policies, feel free to reach out to us. We’d love to talk to you and help find a solution that makes you comfortable without compromising our setting.

What about Flightlust?
Flightlust is a very real occurrence at Pern; there are no Stand-Ins (an event considered incredibly dangerous for all involved) and locking doors is considered reckless endangerment to both riders and dragons. It should be noted that all characters are taught about Flightlust in their Candidacy, and any who feel they would be unable to handle it are weeded out of Candidacy; it is taken very seriously In Character by all dragonriders.

Flight mothing, the term used for the men and women who take part is sexual activities with the losers of a Flight, is a common result of those who did not win, though it is not impossible for a loser to suppress the urge and/or take care of himself after the flight is won by someone else. This ability usually comes after many years of practice, and is not something that is easily done early in the Dragonrider's life.

The dragonriders of Pern strongly believe in the quote ‘Dragon decides, rider complies’ – during Flightlust, the dragon and the human are one. They both want to get laid, and they both do their best to reach a happy ending.

At the end of the day, a dragon will never fly or give chase if their rider isn’t ready for the event; if a rider is young, for example, the dragon will never put their rider at risk of being hurt by putting them through a sexual experience they aren’t ready for – physically or emotionally – it would be detrimental to the bond and the relationship between dragon and rider. As a result, no dragon bonded to someone under 17 years of age will ever Fly or give Chase.

A dragon will likely still Fly or give Chase if their rider finds it uncomfortable but they would never do so if their rider would find it traumatic. In the end, it is up to the Player to determine this aspect of their dragon/rider relationship, and make the judgement they feel best suits the situation!

Passage of Time

Our Calendar

World of Pern follows a 1:1 passage of time, running in real time. On the first day of each Real Life month, the In Character month changes. Our Pernese use a 12 month calendar of 30 days each, divided into the four classic seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn. A current calendar can be found in the header bar, including previous months weather for the purpsoe of back dated threads.

Please be aware that we do not allow future-posting - you may not start a thead dated after the current real life date. Eg, if today is the 21st of October, you cannot create a thread for the 25th of month 10, of the current Turn.

Back dating threads is both allowed and encouraged.

CHARACTER CREATION

Do you impose character slots?

No, we don’t have character slots. You are welcome to make as many characters as you feel you can reasonably handle. We do request that new players limit themselves to three characters while they establish themselves and get comfortable, but it isn’t a hard set requirement.

What are your activity requirements?

Short answer: We don’t have any;

There are exceptions, however. Generally speaking, if you play a character who holds rank or responsibilities, you are expected to RP with anyone that wants to thread with that character. You are agreeing to that character being available for RPing when you take on the rank; if you don’t want any posting requirements than we advise you to avoid ranking and responsibility positions.

Can I purchase genetic traits? (eg, blonde hair)

There is no need to purchase traits such as hair, eye or skin colour; so long as it is realistically possible in the real world, then we are happy to accept your character. However, it should be noted that we reserve the right to put a temporary or permanent hold on traits that are generally rare if too many people are making characters with them.

Is there a pet limit? What can I start with?

Not really. We would prefer that a Character not have more than three or so Firelizards at any given time, simply because it becomes difficult to play out multiples and keep them active and interacting with the general roleplay.

Gold firelizards need to be purchased from the site Store, where they are available irregularly, and can be assigned to a character and Impressed in game as fitting individual plot needs. Occasionally, a clutch may be played out in game, but this is likely to be rare, as the Player of the clutching gold needs to buy a clutch from the Store.

Will there ever be mutated dragons or sport colours?

Simple answer: No

However, with that said, there is always the possibility for plotting and mayhem that can come in the form of unique (but still canon) dragons popping up. An albino dragon, for example, is not impossible – just incredibly unlikely. On that note, please don't ask for this to happen. The team will bring it about if and when it fits, and not before.

Does Sexuality and/or Gender play a role in Impression?

Sexuality: No
Gender: Yes, to an extent.

Gold, Bronze and Brown dragons were programed by their creator to look for specific keys in the human they seek as a life partner. While it can’t be completely understood what it is they look for, it can be broadly cast as seeking only the mind of a cis-person. In comparison, green and blue dragons were not programed with as much detail when created, and retain their more firelizard-like tendencies to simply Bond to a human who fits them, even or in spite of, a mind that is at odds with the physical body.

RANKING CHARACTERS

Can I play a gold?

Yes, yes you can. There are an assortment of golds available from previous clutches at the time of writing this, and there will be irregular availability through clutches, though their appearance will be lessening as the population of Pern reaches stable numbers.

Does a Gold make me Staff?

No, but it does give you certain responsibilities. As a goldrider, you are responsible for keeping tabs on when your gold rises, clutches and hatches her eggs. You are responsible for running the Hatching (be it NPC or PC) though you may or may not be responsible for creating the dragonets. We encourage you to take part, but it isn’t required.

Do I need gold to write dragonets?

Not at all! If you would like to create a dragonet for someone’s character, you are more than welcome to offer your services as well as tell us what dragon you think would best suit them. If your ideas mesh well with their candidate application (of which only the admin are privy to) then we will encourage you to create the dragonet and pass it to us via the ‘Candidate Application’ forum.

How many of the different character types can I have?

For female dragonrider limitations, please go here and read more in depth here.

All male-ridden dragonrider colours and ranks can be held in multiply, so long as they are not being wasted; for example, if you happen to have two Weyrleader positions but only one is getting actively played, you may be encouraged to give up the second rank (though not without plot!) to someone else so that they can enjoy the rank and give it the activity it deserves.

Additionally, you are encouraged to only play one MasterCrafter, though you may play multiple masters of a craft, and of course Lords and Ladies are available by the handful – especially the minor ones – and there are no limits on how many of those you may play.
